One nagging question I've got is, should the buffer spring be considered part of that reciprocating mass? (Logic says yes, but I assume the answer is no.) If so, that could possibly explain the theoretical discrepancy. Original Colt SMG references are to a 21-21.5 oz total. I figure small reductions would be relatively safe, checking for case bulging after each change. If only testing it were as simple as FTE's or no trigger reset if things go wrong. 20-21 oz is considered the sweet spot by our resident expert, but a lot of people (mostly competitive shooters with custom hand loads) report 18 oz being ideal. I'm currently at 21.4 oz and suspect I can go lower still. But the more I read, the more I questioned that. I started out with a ~23 oz total bolt + buffer, following the "more is better" general line of thinking. I imagine most will agree, determining what BCG and buffer weight to use for 9mm blowback is something of a dark art.
